However, it then found a solution and reopened the file with the *.doc name, but with the equations from the new equation editor intact (i.e. When I tried to resave the *.doc file as an *.docx file, Word stopped working. I found that some of my saveAs attempts created a file name in the directory, but did not save anything (file size of zero). When I tried to save the document as an XML or a strict open XML document I got the same failure to save.
I was able to save the file as a pdf file to make sure I had a complete copy. When I changed the file name in the SaveAs Dialog before clicking save, the SaveAs dialog box reappeared with the original file name.
